Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.
The site, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several approach shafts providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.
There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This action shows British leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.
RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.
"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," Healey said. "Including them were a great many British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."
In December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The U.N. reports IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
